Tradition served at the table.

Long before becoming a gastronomic landmark, La Regaleira was already a name rooted in the city. And it was inside this house that the original Francesinha was born in 1952

Where the original Francesinha was born.

The origin of the Francesinha begins inside La Regaleira, when António Passos invited Daniel David da Silva, then a bartender in France, to become part of this house.

Inspired by the “Croque Monsieur”, Daniel reinterpreted the concept with a Portuguese identity, richer meats, a more intense flavour and a secret sauce with a strong, spicy character.

That is how a singular recipe was born, created in Porto, for Porto, and destined to become part of the national gastronomic heritage.

More than seven decades later, that recipe continues to be served with the same respect for its origin.

Generations of dedication

La Regaleira has always believed that tradition is not preserved through the recipe alone, but through those who live it every day.

Many of the professionals who serve this house have been part of it for decades. Some already represent generational continuity, reflecting a culture built on experience, proximity and pride.

More than collaborators, they are part of La Regaleira’s identity.

Past, present and continuity.

The space changed. The essence never did.

In 2018, the closure of the original house marked a difficult moment for everyone who recognised La Regaleira as a symbol of the city. But the story did not end there. In 2021, La Regaleira returned to Rua do Bonjardim, just a few metres below its original location, giving Porto back one of its greatest gastronomic landmarks.
